Foundation Subjects
Believe, Achieve, Together We SucceedHistory
At Hagley Primary School, we aim to integrate the teaching and learning of History within the wider creative curriculum. The subject provides many fantastic opportunities for cross curricular learning and the chance for children to apply the skills learnt in English and Maths. We provide a History curriculum which covers a wide range of topics, covering the earliest civilizations through to modern periods such as the Second World War. In order to enhance the learning experience, where possible, the children will be taken to historically significant places and museums displaying primary and secondary source material. Within school, the children are encouraged to engage with a variety of source material in order to develop their skills in historical enquiry. They will encounter key concepts such as significance, change, cause and effect. By studying the subject, they will identify how historians lay claims using a range of evidence and that not all interpretations of the same event will agree. The children will learn to understand the reasons why interpretations will differ depending on the context. Questioning is a crucial aspect of historical enquiry; therefore, the children will be encouraged to develop their questions to enhance their understanding and also to provide challenge. Teaching will encompass the history of the wider world, alongside Britain’s past. This will enable the children to further develop their understanding of key British values such as democracy and government

Geography
At Hagley Primary School, a sense of place is an important aspect in many of the topics covered. On occasions, Geography will be the centre of the topic within the curriculum. The main aim of teaching and learning within Geography is to inspire the children with a fascination about the world and its people. Teaching should allow the children to understand and respect the differences between a wide range of people and environments. The children will cover both human and physical Geography and the relationship between the two. Teaching will ensure that children develop an understanding of where they are within the world: this includes the names of the continents, oceans and globally significant places. Fieldwork skills will be taught both in School and off-site, which will include the gathering of data, including the use of digital technology. The children will be encouraged to communicate geographical information in a variety of ways which will provide opportunities to use the skills acquired in English and Maths. Finally, the children will develop their map skills throughout primary school and will include a wider range of maps for different purposes.

Religious Education
Hagley Primary School follows the Worcestershire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
The aims are:
- Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs
- Understand the impact and significance of religuous and non-religious beliefs
- Make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts, practices and ideas studied
The syllabus requires that all pupils learn about Christianity in each Key Stage. In addition, pupils will learn about Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism. Furthermore, non-religious world views, such as Humanism, are also studied. Although adopting the LA syllabus, as a school we have reflected on our community and adapted units accordingly to further our children’s understanding of a range of faiths.
RE is taught in line with curriculum topics in KS1 and KS2 and may form a special week of teaching or taught throughout the term depending on the topic.

Art
At Hagley Primary School, we aim to harness and develop each child’s creativity through an inspiring and challenging Art curriculum. We encourage the children to ‘wake up’ to the visual world that surrounds them and utilise these observations, their imaginations and work of other artists as a springboard to produce their own creative work. In each Key Stage, children will practise skills and record their ideas. The children plan and draw in sketchbooks, which progress with them through the school. These act as a source of inspiration particularly in Key Stage Two. There is an emphasis on developing their proficiency in drawing, painting and sculpture but other Art techniques will support these three major skills. They will build upon an Art vocabulary year by year based on the elements of line, colour, pattern, form and texture. They will apply this language when evaluating and analysing their own creative work and the work of others. Alongside this, the children will increase their knowledge of great artists, craft-makers and designers. They will research and appreciate artists from a variety of historical periods and also from different cultures. There is an opportunity to focus on an Art project in greater depth each year in the form of a Performing Arts Week. The children will develop their ideas in a topic that fits in with a global theme and has cross curricular links with Dance, Drama and Music.

Music
Performing Arts Education is about the children appreciating and understanding Music, Dance and Drama through the fundamental experiences of composing, performing, listening to and appraising their own and others’ contributions. They are practical, creative subjects which can benefit all children in developing imagination, the ability to listen/watch attentively and to express thoughts and feelings. Performing Arts opportunities are open to all children at Hagley Primary School regardless of gender and ability. They are given the chance to perform at Harvest, Christmas, Easter and at the end of Year 6 where they speak, sing, act, play or dance in concerts to the school, family and friends and to the wider community each year. Children in Key Stage Two are able to take part in extra -curricular Performing Arts opportunities e.g.: Choir, Dance club, or learning to play one of the many musical instruments on offer. We hope that these opportunities will inspire children to work together, to feel happy about themselves, the environment and the world they live in. All children are taught Music as outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum programmes of study, based on knowledge, skill, understanding and breadth of study. Key Stage One pupils are taught Music by the Class Teacher and Key Stage Two pupils are taught by a specialist teacher.

French
The teaching of a foreign language is a statutory requirement in Key Stage Two and each class receives French lessons, delivered by a specialist teacher, which enables us to ensure progression throughout this phase and on to Secondary Education. Equal emphasis is placed on the skills of listening and responding, speaking, reading and writing, along with knowledge about language. This is achieved through activities such as singing, saying rhymes, role play, presentations, using IT and games.

Personal, Social, Health and Education
At Hagley Primary School we value the importance of our children’s physical, social and health education. Our PSHE curriculum has been created and designed using the knowledge of our children and drawing on support from the PSHE Associations curriculum builder. We aim to support each child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) throughout the teaching of our curriculum. Within the rapidly changing world in which we live, it is vital that these areas are explored in a safe and supportive environment. Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Our pupils are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. They learn how society is organised and governed and experience the process of democracy in school through the school council. We provide opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse society.

Computing
At Hagley Primary School, we understand that a high-quality computing education is essential for all pupils to be confident digital citizens who have the knowledge, skills and understanding to use technology safely, creatively and effectively. In both key stages we use the ‘Teach Computing’ scheme to ensure our children receive a balanced computing curriculum between the three computing strands (Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy). Key Stage 1 will link the units to their topic sessions and teach computing in a cross-curricular way. However, Key Stage 2 children will be taught the ‘Teach Computing’ scheme explicitly by our specialist computing teacher. When skills have been taught, children may have the opportunity to apply these skills in a cross-curricular way through topic sessions drawing on aspects of their learning. We have a progression of skills document which highlights the skills the children will be developing through the Teach Computing scheme of work. Key Stage 2 will also explore a range of coding languages so that they can apply their programming skills and become confident coders. Additionally, we have a keyboard skills unit where all children from Reception to Year 6 will learn how to use different keys on the keyboard.
Today’s society, and the importance of mental health and wellbeing, means we have a separate Online Safety progression of skills document and these skills are taught by the class teacher during “Get Connected Weeks” throughout the year. This allows the whole school to focus on digital safety alongside regular messages in class discussions, assemblies and other curriculum areas (such as PSHE). We use the ‘Education for a Connected World’ framework to support our Online Safety curriculum. A skills overview document ensures that there is clear progression between year groups and that specific skills are being taught. The Computing curriculum allows teachers to have the flexibility to link computing skills to topic lessons and therefore create a more in-depth understanding of what children are learning.
Children at Hagley Primary school enjoy computing lessons. They find them challenging yet rewarding. Pupil Voice meetings show that children can talk about what they have been taught. They enjoy using Seesaw (an online children’s blog), both for their lessons and as a platform for home school communication, and they understand why they need to be taught computing and how computing fits in to the world of work.
High expectations are set in all lessons. Children are taught to try and fix their own problems before asking for help. This approach enables children to develop their computational thinking skills and learn more about how we use technology and equipment. Learning activities are adapted for children who require additional support or need to be challenged. There are also open-ended tasks in lessons to stretch and challenge those pupils who have understood the concept.
The long-term plan for Computer Science considers the skills children have already been taught. Teaching time is used effectively so that the information children are learning is embedded into long term memory. We have retrieval practice so that children are revisiting key skills once they have been taught e.g. through quizzes at the beginning of a lesson. Teachers are also encouraged to make links to previous lessons and concepts and support children in justifying their responses with evidence from what they have previously learnt. Additionally, we allow children to work with the information they have been given through partner talk, debating or writing down their responses to the topic or question. Using these strategies enables children to access the information they have been given and store it in long term memory through regular and repetitive retrieval.
Staff training sessions are run to support teachers with understanding the computing curriculum and support is given with planning. In addition, regular updates and resources are provided to ensure staff receive support with digital safety. This includes lesson plans, websites, videos and safeguarding updates. Children’s work is recorded through Seesaw journals and individual log ins for laptops. As part of our curriculum, the children are taught how to use this personal area, including security and organisational features. Additionally, we create a scrap book in each year group to use as a memory aid to recap on last lesson’s learning.

Online Safety
At Hagley Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of our pupils is paramount. In a world that is increasingly becoming more technologically advanced, our intention is to equip children with the skills and knowledge they need for the online world. Through our curriculum and school culture, we educate pupils to be resilient, mature and empathetic members and teach them how to navigate online challenges they may encounter. We empower our pupils to explore and experience the positive benefits of the online space whilst developing the cultural capital to safely manage themselves, their relationships and interpretations of online information to enable them to succeed in life.
