Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Believe, Achieve, Together We SucceedWelcome to the Social and Emotional Learning Web Page
My name is Nicola Farenden.
I am the Thrive and Pastoral Lead at Hagley Primary School.

My passion lies in ensuring that every child at Hagley receives the support they need to feel safe, understood, and nurtured—so they can truly thrive throughout their learning journey.
At Hagley Primary, we are fortunate to have an incredible pastoral team. Thrive is at the heart of our school ethos, shaping the way we support children socially, emotionally, and academically. Our aim is to create a caring and supportive environment where every child feels valued and able to reach their full potential.
We are committed to helping children build resilience, develop independence, and grow in confidence. Through our work, we provide children with tools and strategies they can use independently to manage difficult situations, reflect upon actions and situations, understand their emotions, and respond to their feelings in positive and constructive ways. These skills help lay strong foundations for lifelong emotional well-being—from Reception through to Year 6—equipping them to confidently navigate each stage of their school journey, including the important and exciting transition to secondary school and beyond.
The Thrive Room
As a Thrive School of Excellence and our commitment to wellbeing, we also work closely with OPAL during lunchtimes, providing a visible and supportive presence for children. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, helping them navigate friendship challenges, or simply being there if they are having a tricky time, we make sure no child feels alone.
Communication is central to what we do. We maintain close and consistent contact with teachers, support staff, children, families, and external agencies to ensure a holistic and joined-up approach. Strong relationships with parents are especially important to us—we believe that working together is the key to helping children flourish.
We offer a variety of tailored interventions designed to meet individual needs. These may focus on emotional regulation, social skills, confidence building, or providing support through specific family or personal challenges.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you feel your child would benefit from additional support. You can usually find us by the lynch gate in the mornings, or you can contact the school office by phone or email to arrange a conversation.
