Year 2 Curriculum

TOPIC

AUTUMN

During Autumn 1 our topic is Trips and Treats.  In this topic, we will be focusing on the seaside and using this theme throughout our history, geography and art lessons.  In geography, we will be recapping the countries that make up the UK; learning to identify human and physical features and using aerial maps.  We will be looking at what the seaside was like in Victorian times and comparing to modern day.  In art, we will be using shells to practise the skill of observational drawing, using different lines and shading.

ENGLISH

AUTUMN

In English, we will be learning about word classes (nouns, adjectives and verbs) and usinf a range of adjectives when we are writing.  We will be basing some of our writing around the seaside theme and enjoying our key text ‘Sally and the Limpet’.  We will also be reciting poetry and writing some of our own poems.

Recommended Reading

As well as banded books and library books that come home from school, it is really important that children have access to a wide variety of texts.  Children should be reading and sharing poetry, fiction and non-fioction regularly.  Encourage reading for pleasure by helping your child find topics and authors that they enjoy and allow children to re-read their favourites.  There are so many wonderful authors and there are new books being released all the time.  If you can, make time to visit the local library.  Remember, it’s not just about reading the words, have conversations with the children about what they are reading.

Please see below for some recommended books for Year 2.

MATHS

AUTUMN

In Maths, we will focus on counting and place value, including ordering and comparing numbers.  The pupils will develop their understanding of + and – using different mental calculation strategies. The pupils will also practice mental recall facts throughout the year.

PE INDOOR (TUESDAY)

AUTUMN

Indoor PE will be dance where we will be building simple movement patterns and transitioning between shapes and balances.  We will also be working as part of a group and create and perform simple dances.

PE OUTDOOR (THURSDAY)

AUTUMN

Outdoor PE will be our run, jump and throw unit.  Children will be developing their power, agility, coordination and balance and working on showing increased control of their body and limbs.

Please can you ensure your child has the correct PE kit and wears it to school on the days when your child has PE. Warm jumpers and joggers are also recommended at this time of year for Outdoor PE.

HOMELEARNING

Home learning will be shared via Seesaw on a Wednesday.  Each week there will be one activity for your child to complete at home.  It will either have a maths or English focus.  Home learnng is to be completed by the following Wednesday and shared via Seesaw.

Reading

Children will bring home two banded reading books (matched to their reading level) and one library book each Friday.  Please read with your child at home three times during the week and discuss the book along with any new vocabulary.  Please share this reading via Seesaw (preferably in one post) and return books to school on a Wednesday.

Equipment

The children do not need to bring in any specific equipment.  We will let you know when an apron/old shirt is needed for any art lessons using paint.

Polite Notices

Refillable water bottles are great to keep your children focussed and hydrated throughout the day – please can you ensure your child has a water bottle in school with no squash or flavoured water.
